Our worship
Worship lies at the heart of all the Community's life and concerns. The daily life on Iona begins and ends with worship. Over the years, a style of worship has grown up, beginning with George Macleod and the first Community members, which is appropriate for the place, the Iona Community and the people who come. It is direct, and to the point, allowing the ancient buildings and beautiful surroundings to speak for themselves. It is relevant and challenging, reflecting the Community’s engaged spirituality and its concern to ‘find new ways to touch the hearts of all’. And it is inclusive and accessible in language and gospel. You do not have to be a churchgoer to feel at home in an Abbey service, nor need people be experienced or ordained before they can lead worship here. It is a place for everyone.
But we don’t only worship on Iona. Whenever members gather in their local groups or plenary meetings, we worship together. Prayer, song and symbolic action is an important part of many of the campaigning and community activities we are involved in. And part of our commitment to justice, healing and reconciliation is expressed through the work of the Iona Prayer Circle, a worldwide network which prays for people and places in distress.
The work of the Wild Goose Resource Group is significant within the life of the Community and has made a remarkable global contribution to the revitalisation of worship, through the discovery of new forms of relevant and participative worship and through the production of songs and other resources for liturgy. Many other members of the Community are also liturgists, song-writers and facilitators for the church in Britain and for international ecumenical gatherings. Some of their work is available through Wild Goose Publications. For further information see Iona Community Worship more>
