We’ll be joined this year by Laurel Townhead. Laurel serves as Director of QUNO Geneva, leading and enabling the whole staff team to realise a vision of a UN system and community of nations that support and uphold the dignity of all, so that peace and justice can flourish and our shared home can be nurtured. Laurel started her life in community on the moors in Yorkshire and grew up in Sheffield. She enjoys being in nature, snowshoeing in the winter and swimming in the lake in the summer and being with her family (in any season). Laurel is a Member of South East London Area Meeting and appreciates getting to align her faith with her work and connecting to Quaker witness

Before becoming Director in September 2025, Laurel was QUNO Human Rights and Refugees Representative for 11 years, leading QUNO’s work to uphold the dignity of all members of our human family – with a focus on migration, conscientious objection to military service and criminal justice systems. This was a significant part of the Laurel’s 20+ years of experience working on the promotion and protection of human rights nationally and through the UN human rights system, on a range of issues including criminal justice, migration, refugee protection, children’s rights and women’s rights. She enjoys combining legal and political analysis with connecting with people and draws energy from creating safe and brave spaces for conversation and collaboration.
