March 2009

Welcome to the third edition of the new monthly Iona Community e-bulletin. The Iona Community e-bulletin is a companion to Coracle: the magazine of the Iona Community, and like Coracle focuses on issues at the heart of the Iona Community: prayer and politics, justice and peace and the integrity of creation, hospitality and welcome, healing, the renewal of worship, the rebuilding of community … See below! … And keep in touch.

For the Word of God in scripture,
for the Word of God among us,
for the Word of God within us,
THANKS BE TO GOD.

From 'Iona Abbey Worship Book'
(Wild Goose Publications)

TRANSITION TO A COMMUNITY-BASED ECONOMY, by Heather Marshall
Associate member Heather Marshall writes about the Transition Movement and Transition Towns. Heather says: 'The more I read about and am involved with this movement, the more it connects with my desire to see the possibility of God's kingdom here on earth, with a return to more connectedness between people, the land and their livelihoods – and much more beyond that.'

GANDHI FOUNDATION LECTURE, by Helen Steven and Ellen Moxley
For over 30 years, Community Members Helen Steven and Ellen Moxley have campaigned tirelessly against WMDs and the arms industry. In 2004, Helen and Ellen received the Gandhi International Peace Award and gave the 2004 Gandhi Foundation Annual Lecture. Many Iona folk may not have heard or yet read this talk, which is entitled 'Nonviolence or Nonexistence'.

THE LEAVING OF BOSSEY, by Murdoch Mackenzie
Community Member Murdoch MacKenzie has spent the last six months volunteering at The Ecumenical Institute at Bossey. The Ecumenical Institute is the international centre for encounter, dialogue and formation of the World Council of Churches. Founded in 1946, the Institute brings together people from diverse churches, cultures and backgrounds for ecumenical learning, academic study and personal exchange.

CRUCIFIXION, by Stewart Smith
A reflection on the painting 'Crucifixion' by De Maistre, which hangs in the North Transept of Iona Abbey.

THE UNTIDY DRAWER, by Tom Gordon
Tom Gordon, Chaplain at Marie Curie Hospice in Edinburgh, reads excerpts from his book 'A Need for Living: Signposts on the Journey of Life and Beyond' (Wild Goose Publications). 'A Need for Living' is a book 'for people facing a life crisis and for those who care for the dying. Ultimately it is for everyone, especially those for whom traditional words and symbols have failed, and who need new images to help them live again …'
