EDINBURGH 2010: WITNESSING TO CHRIST TODAY, by Murdoch MacKenzie
As an ecumenical Community we owe part of our inheritance to the Ecumenical Movement, which had its origins in the World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910. The 60th anniversary of the WCC was celebrated in Geneva in 2008, and the Centenary of Edinburgh 1910, at the beginning of June 2010 (June 2-6), is regarded as a significant moment for churches throughout the world seeking direction for Christian mission in the 21st century.

Since 2005, an international group has worked collaboratively to develop an intercontinental and multi-denominational project, now known as Edinburgh 2010. Iona Community member Mitchell Bunting (Bungie) has been deeply involved in organising this project and event.

To find out more about Edinburgh 2010, and how to get involved, read Murdoch's MacKenzie's article here in Features. Murdoch, as many know, has himself been deeply involved in the ecumenical movement throughout his rich life.

A POSTCARD FROM YANOUN, by Jan Sutch Pickard
Member Jan Sutch Pickard has been working in Yanoun as an Ecumenical Accompanier with Quaker Peace and Social Witness, serving on the World Council of Churches’ Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). Read another of Jan's powerful, poetic 'postcards' from Yanoun.

THE ECUMENICAL ACCOMPANIMENT PROGRAMME IN ISRAEL AND PALESTINEThe Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Israel & Palestine is currently taking applications from individuals interested in becoming Ecumenical Accompaniers. The deadline for applications is June 17th. The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) provides protection by presence, supports Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and advocates for an end to the occupation. For more information, click on the News banner, or click on 'More' (below).

THE BELLAHOUSTON GRAFFITI PROJECT LAUNCHThe Iona Community Youth Department has been working with students of Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow on an innovative graffiti project. Initially there was a very successful pilot project, and recently there was an 'unveiling' of a larger graffiti project. The students' positive graffiti covers a bridge which is at times a problem area in the community. See some photos of the launch – full of colour and hope.

TACKLING BIGOTRY BEHIND BARS, by Lucy Adams
A Herald article about the work of the Iona Community Youth Department, in particular, the anti-sectarian workshops that Laura McAlesse has written and is facilitating in Scottish prisons – vital, frontline work that is drawing the attention of the Scottish government and is being praised by Scottish MPs.

Following Lucy's article is a reflection by Ron Ferguson, from his weekly Herald column, on Iona Community youth work, past and present.

NEWS FROM THE GERMAN IONA GROUP
From March 5-7, 2010, the German-speaking Family Group met in Basel, Switzerland. The group continued to explore some of the ideas already identified as European-wide concerns by the Iona Continentals meeting in August 2009, in particular, a focus on inter-religious dialogue and co-operation. In view of the growing Islamophobia in many European countries – as evidenced by the Swiss vote against the construction of minarets; the outcome of municipal elections in the Netherlands favouring a party that foments anti-Islamic sentiments; and the tone and content of the public discourse on Islam in many countries – the German Iona Group is here asking the Iona Community to establish a working group on 'Inter-religious Dialogue and Cooperation' …
