Welcome to the second edition of the new monthly Iona Community e-bulletin. The Iona Community e-bulletin is a companion to Coracle: the magazine of the Iona Community and like Coracle focuses on issues at the heart of the Iona Community: prayer and politics, justice and peace and the integrity of creation, hospitality and welcome, healing, the renewal of worship, the rebuilding of community … See below! … And keep in touch.
For the Word of God in scripture,

for the Word of God within us,
THANKS BE TO GOD.

BREAKING THE SIEGE WITH DIGNITY, by Jock McDougall
Jock McDougall, a retired physician, sailed on Dignity, a 20-metre, 8-berth motor yacht operated by the Free Gaza Movement, on its maiden voyage to break the Siege of Gaza. The boat was carrying 3 tonnes of medical supplies. 'During our brief stay,' Jock writes, 'I saw no "terrorists". I saw farmers who could not cultivate their fields, fishermen, workers with no work and shopkeepers with half-empty shelves. I saw the staff of hospitals unable to treat all their patients, and I saw grieving families. I saw a brave, determined, spirited people showing astonishing resilience, determined to survive their hardship …
THE GIFFORD LECTURE BY CHIEF RABBI, JONATHAN SACKS
Towards the end of this lecture, Rabbi Sacks reminds his audience, and us, that: 'The Pentateuch in one place, and only one place, says: "Love your neighbour as yourself", but in 36 places says, "Love the stranger". That is the single most important imperative in this age of global interconnectedness and multicultural societies in which all of us live in a world of strangers …'
TAKE LIGHT, GIVE LIGHT, by Lotte Webb

FEEDBACK FROM AN E-BULLETIN READER
BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS
In his first 100 days, Barack Obama has put into motion a multi-billion dollar economic stimulus plan, funded by US taxpayers, which aims to save and create jobs, give help to the unemployed and look into the issue of energy. He has reached out to Iran, and has ordered an additonal 17,000 troops into Afghanistan to help fight the Taliban. He has announced plans to close Guantánamo Bay, and US plans to expand Bagram Air Base where some prisoners of the US are held … How do you feel Barack Obama is getting on in his first 100 days in office? Write the e-bulletin with your views, reactions, concerns, hopes, dreams … and the e-bulletin may share them in the Feedback section of a future edition of the e-bulletin.
