HOLY CITY 2007-2008

GRAHAM MAULE wonders where the last session of WGRG’s Glasgow event, HOLY CITY, went to...

Yup that was the year that was... a weekly unleashing of the expanded delights and challenges of HOLY CITY’s 2007-08 theme, Dancing on the edge... on an unsuspecting Glaswegian populace (of course, I could be meaning the planning group, who as ever, gave their all to enable the events to happen).

We heard from guest workshoppers from such far flung places as Moldova, Palestine, Belarus, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Nicaragua, Israel, Edinburgh...

We explored forgiveness; the poetics and ecologics of prophecy; were treated to an erudite swipe at the delusions of the latest psuedo-religion: Dawkianity; measured our carbon shoe size (or was that footprint?); gazed at icons; explored happy and unhappy families; mused on if a Christian can be a Scottish Nationalist; heard of a remarkable Glaswegian theatrical event at Easter, called ‘The Southside Passion’; learned why Scotland probably needs a Queer Church; explored Sex in The Garden (with a Catholic priest...); heard lullabies from the ‘Axis of Evil’; celebrated common ground between the great world faiths; discussed greening all imaginable corners of our lives; encountered the eco-Jesus; were enthralled by a microscopic-scale view of nature (don’t ask about the snails!), deconstructed Christmas with ALTERnativity...
We made lots of creatively glorious improvisatory messes, some big heads, lots of dancing silhouettes, flung big dauds of clay around, and some sticky old sellotape people...
We were joined on placement too by a gem of a student priest called Dominic (well, the ladies of the planning group said I should write that); we launched our new website; tried Living With Jesus, Saving Jesus, singing Wee Sings, and generally got all out of breath...

So feeling like we’ve exhausted every possible workshop and worship option our tiny minds can envisage, we need a rest... so we’ll be taking one over the summer... until we realise there are some more possible ideas and we’ll probably have to start up all over again in the autumn!
Watch this space... or the web one....
